In the Gran Sasso National Park stands a good part of the Italian Apennines, a series of mountains that extend from north to south of the country. This is the central part of the Apennines, specifically the Gran Sasso, the highest mountain in the Apennines with 2912m high. Different biomes can be found, between lakes, grasslands, canyons and ancient architecture including the castle of Rocca calascio, the medieval castle located highest in Europe.
